Kogan TOBARI (1882-1927) began his life as an illustrator.
After the death of his close friend, Morie OGIWARA, who introduced
the modernism of Rodin to sculptors in Japan at the beginning
of the twentieth century. At that time Japanese sculptors were
still pre-occupied with external appearances. TOBARI and Teijiro
NAKAHARA had a major impact on sculpting in Japan from around
1910 through the 1920's their influence is still visible today.
TOBARI, who was also active in both the creative printing and
water-color painting genre, through his delicate sense and flexible
modelling acquired his own unique, expressive style of sculpture.
This exhibition introduces not only the works of TOBARI comprehensively,
but also the sculptures of Rodin and of sixteen Japanese artists.
Through this exhibition we hope to introduce to visitors Kogan
TOBARI's personal style and brilliance. |
